Somalia’s immunization story is turning a corner. In 2024, about 70% of children completed the critical third dose of DTP3, up 28 points since 2012, with faster gains after 2019. The rise reflects system improvements: steadier supply, solar powered cold chain facilities, wider outreach and catch-up campaigns.
Progress is real, but two gaps stand out. Somalia’s national average ~70% still lags the global benchmark of approximately 85% in 2024. More children get the first dose of DTP than finish the series, so completion is the next hurdle. National averages also often hide differences between federal states and districts. To understand the full equity picture, the Ministry of Health should regularly publish granular, district level data – showing where children are being missed, which communities being left behind.
