About
About Xogsawir
Xogsawir tells Somalia's story, one chart at a time.
Some of the most important information about our country sits buried inside dense PDFs, statistical bulletins, survey microdata and technical reports written for specialists.
We believe this information belongs to the public. Our mission is to liberate that data, clean it, and translate it into clear, accurate visual stories that anyone can understand.
What we cover
We publish data stories and charts about Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa, from budgets and the economy to health, education, and public services. The kinds of issues that are critical but are often underreported, poorly explained, or missing from public discussion.
Every chart we publish is built on verified data. We clean and check the numbers carefully. Each chart is designed to explain one idea clearly and simply.
All of our work is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. This means our gallery is completely free and open to all. We actively encourage local media outlets, civil society organizations, and educators to republish our charts, in print or online, provided they credit Xogsawir.
Teaching data, in Somali
Reading a chart well is a skill, and so is asking the right questions of a dataset.
On our blog and YouTube channel, we publish tutorials in Somali on how to read graphs, work with spreadsheets, and understand statistics. Our aim is to make data literacy more practical, accessible, and easier to learn without a language barrier.
Jaantus
Xogsawir is a project of Jaantus, a nonprofit focused on data journalism and digital public infrastructure in Somalia.
Jaantus also publishes open datasets and works on building Somali lexicon for data, tech and digital rights, including Kasmo, a Somali AI lexicon, and the Somali Digital Rights Lexicon.
Get in touch
We are open to collaborations, datasets, and story ideas.
